Health and Care Sector Sees Major New Developments
Several important developments have recently taken place in the health and care sector.
A new chief executive for NHS Employers has been appointed. Ben Morrin will take on the role in July and will focus on improving workforce leadership and supporting NHS organisations. He has previously worked in senior NHS roles and has experience in improving staff working conditions and employment practices. His appointment comes during a major restructuring involving NHS Employers, NHS Confederation and NHS Providers, which will form a new unified membership organisation called The NHS Alliance.
In another development, the Health and Social Care Committee has called for improvements in palliative care services for children and young people. The committee has recommended that the government include proper standards for children’s palliative care in upcoming healthcare plans and ensure that services are available 24/7. They also highlighted the need for more specialist doctors and nurses in this area.
The government has also announced reform plans for the General Medical Council (GMC). These reforms aim to modernise the current regulatory system, improve patient safety, and make it easier to regulate different healthcare professionals. The reforms also focus on improving transparency, addressing racism in the healthcare system, and helping regulators respond faster to changes in the workforce.
Meanwhile, the UK Parliament has approved several changes to the tobacco and vapes bill to strengthen regulations. The new changes include stricter age verification rules, licensing systems, and tighter advertising regulations. The government also plans to invest in enforcement to control illegal tobacco sales.
In another issue, the NHS App recently caused confusion among patients regarding waiting times. Many patients misunderstood the waiting time information shown in the app, thinking it was a personal waiting time. NHS England has now updated the app to show clearer information about how long most patients usually wait for treatment.
Additionally, a children’s hospital had to close some beds and reduce operations because the Iran war has affected international patients travelling for treatment. This has reduced the number of patient referrals to the hospital and may take several months to return to normal.
Finally, the Russell Group of universities has announced a plan to train 26,000 more healthcare professionals by 2030. This includes doctors, nurses, dentists and scientists. The aim is to increase the healthcare workforce and improve patient care in the future.
