Kennedy touts new food policies but avoids vaccines in remarks to US Congress

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. focused on nutrition and food safety initiatives during recent appearances before the United States Congress, while largely avoiding questions related to his controversial stance on vaccination policy.

Testifying before the House Ways and Means Committee and the Appropriations health subcommittee, Kennedy outlined elements of the Trump administration’s proposed 2027 health budget and policy priorities. His remarks highlighted food safety, nutrition, and broader public health initiatives, but made limited reference to vaccine reform efforts or ongoing work related to autism research.

The shift in focus comes amid political sensitivity ahead of upcoming midterm elections, with reports indicating that the White House has encouraged health officials to prioritize less contentious policy areas.

Budget Cuts Face Bipartisan Scrutiny

The proposed budget includes $111 billion in funding for the Department of Health and Human Services, representing a 12.5% reduction from current levels. Key provisions include a $5 billion cut to the National Institutes of Health and the elimination of a low-income energy assistance program.

The proposal has drawn criticism from both sides of the aisle. Susan Collins and other Republicans have questioned the necessity of the cuts, while Democrats have strongly opposed them.

“We are not going to do that,” said Rosa DeLauro, signaling resistance to reductions in health funding.

Kennedy, a longtime critic of vaccines, has faced increased scrutiny following a recent court ruling that blocked parts of his effort to overhaul national vaccine policy and restructure a key advisory panel at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

During the hearings, lawmakers pressed him on issues including rising healthcare costs, public confidence in vaccines, and the federal response to a significant measles outbreak. However, Kennedy largely avoided direct engagement on these topics.
